What YOU should do -

Lock up

Lock your car, even if it is in your driveway. Always lock your door, even a deadbolt can be broken in if the screws are not long enough. A Kentwood Police Officer will do an assessment of the safety of your home, FREE of charge, call Neighborhood Services to schedule, 698-6429. You can register your bicycle with the Police department for $1.00.

Light up

Keep your front lights on all night long. Use motion detector lights. Use timers when you go away and make sure someone you trust picks up your mail and paper.

Look Out

Know your neighbors and let them know if something is going on. Know the neighbor on both sides, across the street and behind your home. Get involved!

Call the Police:

Call the Police when you observe suspicious behavior (persons or cars or lots of barking dogs). People are not always sure what is considered suspicious; if something does not feel right, call - better safe than sorry. Try to note as many details as possible. For cars try to note the color, license plate, type/model, # doors, dents or other unique features. For people, note age, sex, race, clothing, height and other physical features (distinct walk, scars, tattoos, piercings, etc).

Numbers to remember:

911 - Emergency
698-6580, Kentwood Police
698-6429, Neighborhood Services
554-0828, Officer Glenn Culbert,
               Old Farm/Rum Creek Officer

911 and Cell Phones

When you dial 911 on your cell phone, the call is routed to the nearest 'available' State Police Post. Normally this will be the Rockford station, however if there is not cell available the call will be routed to the next available State Police post. This means it is entirely possible that you would be talking with the Paw Paw (or other area in Michigan) State Police Post. You may want to   program the following numbers into your phone:

336-3113 Kent County Dispatch
698-6580 - Kentwood Police

Mark your property:

Engrave all belongings in an inconspicuous place with your license number. Engravers are available at the Kentwood Police Dept, 4900 Breton Rd, FREE of charge! Proof of identity helps get your property back. Video tape your property.
