"It is the mission of the Kentwood Police Department to assist the community in ensuring the safety, individual rights, and quality of life of all citizens." - Kentwood Police Department

What's (as of Tuesday, December 09, 2008)

I am excited to announce that we are planning on restoring the Kentwood Citizen Police Academy to a revised program, beginning in September, 2008.  We are going to reduce it to 6 weeks, instead of the previous 9 week format.  It has been missed by citizens, officers and me.  I believe it to be an important tool to educate our community about law enforcement activities and issues.  Our Fire Department just successfully completed its first Citizen Fire Academy.  With all the critical decisions facing communities and citizens regarding government services, it is important we give them an opportunity to learn about law enforcement services.   -- Richard A. Mattice, Chief of Police

Update 12.09.2008: We graduated our 20th Citizen Academy in November 2008 and will start another in February 2009.We are currently accepting applications.If interested in this 6-week program (Thursday evenings 6:30-9:30 PM), please contact Office Jeff Augustyn at 616-656-6564

Who we are

The Kentwood Citizens Academy Alumni is comprised of the classes that have graduated from the Kentwood Police Department's Citizens Academy program. While the program is no longer offered due to budget cuts, it offered Kentwood citizens a unique 27-hour program consisting of classroom and "hands-on" instruction about the criminal justice system and the role and operations of the Kentwood Police Department. The program was offered twice each year and met for three hours one night each week for nine consecutive weeks.

The program objectives were:

  •  To familiarize the citizens of Kentwood with the organization and functions of the Kentwood Police Department;
  •  To give citizens a better understanding of the parameters in which an officer functions and why officers handle situations as they do;
  •  To develop citizen awareness and understanding of the role of the law enforcement;
  •  To promote a positive image and base of support among members of the Kentwood community;
  •  To develop a nucleus of well-informed citizens who can be a resource for the community in promoting understanding between the community and the Police Department.
